What is the difference between private and unlisted on YouTube?
If you watch a lot of YouTube or you are a content creator on YouTube, you may have heard the term “unlisted” before. Unlisted videos on YouTube have been around for quite some time and they provide unique functionality for the YouTube user. However, many people still have not heard of unlisted videos and may benefit from their ability to create them.
Unlisted Videos on YouTube
An unlisted video on YouTube is a video that has been uploaded to the platform, but cannot be found in search and is not available for public viewing. The link to the video can be shared, but individuals on YouTube cannot find your video using the search function or other means unless you provide them with the private viewing link.
Benefits of an Unlisted Video
The reason that unlisted videos are used quite often is that they provide the uploader with several benefits. The first of which being that YouTube is basically offering the creator a free location to upload their content for viewing.
With the ability to share the viewing link with only those who you wish to view it, you are essentially enjoying free hosting space for your content on your own terms.
Another benefit of an unlisted video is that it will not appear in any search results on YouTube, nor will it appear in your profile. This means that you can enjoy your membership on YouTube and continue to create content that is public while also sending links to friends and families to videos that you would like only them to see.
Difference Between Unlisted and Private Videos
Many people inadvertently use the term “private” and “unlisted” synonymously when referring to videos on YouTube that are intended for certain eyes only. However, there are several key differences that you ought to know if you plan to use either of them.
The first difference between the two designations is that unlisted videos do not require users to have an account on YouTube to view them. This is convenient for those with friends and family that do not have YouTube accounts and no desire to create one. On the other hand, private YouTube videos require the viewer to be logged into their YouTube accounts in order to view them.
Another key difference is that unlisted videos do not have a sharing limit. Anyone who has the link will be able to view the video.
Private videos, on the other hand, have a 25 person sharing limit, but this limitation does not exist for videos that have an unlisted designation.
